Youth Programs: PSA Scholarship Program

The first PSA scholarship was awarded to A.K. Mehta of New Delhi, India in 1954. In 1957 PSA collaborated with the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to award the PSA-RIT Scholarships to beginning RIT photography students. In 1972 PSA established a similar relationship with the Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA) to award scholarships to students who were completing their senior year. In 1977 PSA worked in partnership with Brooks Institute (Santa Barbara, CA) to assist students attending the institute to continue their studies.

PSA Greenhood Scholarship Program

The PSA Greenhood scholarships are awarded to second-year students majoring in photography at a school that offers a degree in photography. The PSA Scholarships and Grants Committee works with the Education Foundation of the Education Management Corporation (EDMC), which oversees the scholarship process for over twenty Art Institutes with photography programs in the US and Canada.

Each year PSA's Scholarships and Grants Committee decides the number of scholarships and the award amounts, determines the application parameters, evaluates the applications and the accompanying portfolios of the finalists, and selects the scholarship recipients in August.

The students provide a statement or essay regarding their goals relating to photography, have a recommendation from a faculty member, must be in good academic standing, and provide a portfolio of six images that showcase their photographic skills, interests, and creativity. A condition of receiving a PSA scholarship award is that the student provides a portfolio of ten new images for display at the following year's PSA Annual Conference.
