MID-ATLANTIC CHAPTER OF PSA SPRING MEETING Nikhil Bahl is a professional nature photographer, educator, author, lecturer and workshop instructor. His goal is to inspire people to appreciate the splendor of nature by becoming aware of that which is easily overlooked, and by transforming the mundane into the exciting through contemplative and artistic interpretation. While his primary aim is to create art with his photographs, he also strives to document the natural world with an eye toward conservation and education. This has led him to volunteer his time and photography skills with the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Nikhil's work has been published in a number of print and electronic media. His fine art prints have been widely exhibited in the Washington metropolitan area, and are part of many private collections. Nikhil also has a passion for teaching photography and leads nature photography workshops and tours in the United States. He teaches photography at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia and through Digital Photo Academy. His instruction is focused on in-camera interpretation and developing personal vision, rather than simply following the traditional rules of photography. Creative Interpretations: Photography is all about interpretation. From subject selection, to focal length, shutter speed and aperture, to camera placement, post-processing, a photographer makes many decisions that interpret the subject. A photographer can show the subject in an atypical manner that may challenge the viewer’s perceptions or by delving into the abstract, the viewer can be left guessing as to what the subject really is. In his presentation, Nikhil Bahl will take participants into the realm of conceptualizing and interpreting the scene that is to be captured by the creative photographer. Henry and Thomas' photo tours are designed by photographers for photographers and offer the finest settings, conditions, and locations for obtaining breathtaking pictures. PEORIA CAMERA CLUB ANNUAL SEMINAR TO FEATURE BEN WILLMORE
Ben’s presentation will focus on the entire photographic process including capturing images with the proper equipment and settings, evaluating shoot locations, creating compositions that are dynamic and eye-catching all the way through the post-processing stage where he will discuss his techniques in the field to capture the best images for editing. Ben will demonstrate his favorite techniques for enhancing and fine-tuning images using a variety of editing tools in order to create a greater visual impact in images. Ben has been involved in the digital world for so long that he can’t remember not having a computer. In high school, he wanted to be a professional photographer and was shooting with 35mm and 4x5 cameras with strobes. While he never lost interest in photography, graphic design was calling him. He began mastering Photoshop and started teaching his own seminars. When digital cameras become more advanced, Ben embraced the craft again and catered his seminars toward photography. His teaching style is not about formulas and steps. Rather, he teaches a true understanding of the subject, whether it be photography or Photoshop, and this is why he has risen to the top of his game as a world-class trainer in the digital arts. Doug has been a photographer for over thirty years and has been a member of a PSA-member club for over twenty-five years. He is the President, PSA Club Representative, and maintains the web site for the Lowcountry Photographic Club (LPC) in North Charleston, SC. Doug is also the Interclub Coordinator for CPID, Nature, and Travel for the Carolina's Nature Photographers Association (CNPA) and has served on the CNPA Board. Doug has been a photography judge for many years and has received many awards for his images. Doug joined PSA in 2009. The program will feature "A Day with Greg Rostami of Topaz Labs." Greg began using computers to develop special effects for film and television and, from the ages of 20 to 24, he created graphics for animation projects, flying logos, on screen playback of monitors for sci-fi movies, and games. He broke into the big leagues with a job for Dream Quest working on a ride film project called Space Shuttle America. He worked on computer special effects for films such as Batman Forever, Outbreak, Species, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Deep Blue Sea, and Mortal Combat. Always an innovator, he went to work for EDS Digital Studios where he developed technologies to digitally restore films, including Gone with the Wind. In 1999, he built the world’s first all Digital transfer process for Disney's animated features. His work on Tarzan changed the way Disney viewed electronic distribution, and was a critical element in the emerging E-Cinema technologies. Today, Greg continues to contract special effects and animation projects. The same innovation and genius that has made a name for him in the special effects realm is what he brings to his work with Topaz Labs. During two sessions (morning and afternoon) Greg will review the Possibilities with Topaz. Participants will learn many of the exciting things that the Topaz Suite can do for photographers and, at the conclusion of the presentation, there will be a special drawing for someone to win a copy of the latest Topaz Suite. There will also be a Special Purchase Price on the Topaz Suite available at the meeting. The cost is $10 for PSA members and $15 for nonmembers. Lunch is not included, but there are several moderately priced lunch spots nearby or participants can bring their own lunch. Michael Rosenbaum recently won the prestigious 2011 Nature's Best Windland Smith Rice International Award (bird category). His image of spoonbills which seem to be kissing, though they are actually engaged in combat, was taken at the Smith Oaks Rookery, High Island, Texas, USA. Because it was overcast he was able to shoot this in the morning, which is when most interaction occurs between spoonbills. Says Michael, "If the sun had been out, I would have been shooting into the sun, and I wouldn't have gotten this photo. It was a freakish blessing in disguise."
His image, along with the winners and a selection of highly honored images in each award category, will be displayed as large-format prints with an accompanying HD video at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural history

Like the original exhibit, the central theme for this show will illustrate the commonalities that all human beings share such as love, family, birth, and death. This approach will also illustrate the development of photography, both technically and artistically, post 1955, the date of the original The Family of Man exhibition. It will be the job of the audience to decide how earlier or later work may aesthetically compare.
The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of PSA is holding its spring meeting at All Saints Lutheran Church, 16510 Mt. Oak Road, Bowie, Maryland. The meeting will feature "Creative Interpretations" by Nikhil Bahl.
