NOBUKAZU TERANISHI RECEIVES 2011 PSA PROGRESS MEDAL

news-Teranishi-200.jpgThe Progress Medal, the Photographic Society of America’s highest award, has been given each year since 1948 (with the exception of 1994) and was presented September 24, 2011 to Nobukazu Teranishi at the Final Banquet of the 73rd Annual Conference of Photography held in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Mr. Teranishi was born in 1953 and has received degrees in physics from the University of Tokyo in 1976 and 1978, respectively. He joined the Panasonic Corporation in 2000 and is the General Manager in the Image Sensor Business Unit in Japan. Mr. Teranishi has been an influential technical leader in the development of both charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors and Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensors for 31 years, and accomplished the following three key technologies; (1) the pinned photodiode for no image lag, low noise and low dark current, (2) technologies to prevent high light deterations, (3) mega –pixel technologies for HDTV cameras and digital still cameras. The pinned photodiode is the most innovative technology in the progress of solid state image sensors, and Mr. Teranishi is widely recognized as its inventor. He invented it in 1980 and by 1982 he had fabricated it experimentally. The pinned photodiode CCD has been mass produced because of its superior performance since the middle of the 1980’s and in the late 1990’s this technology was introduced into CMOS sensors.

There are three key features of the pinned photodiode technology beneficial to image makers. It converts incoming light – photons – into electrons with very high efficiency producing high sensitivity sensors. A second feature is that the so called ‘dark current’ is very low allowing long exposure times without noise. The third feature is that the technology accomplishes transfer of all of the converted electrons from the photosite leaving none behind.

As a result of these features, almost all CCD’s and CMOS sensors came to use this technology and 200 million CCD’s and one billion CMOS sensors were produced in 2008. Today every CCD and every CMOS imager on the market today has the pinned photodiode in every pixel. That means, for example that a 20MP CMOS sensor has 20 million pinned photodiodes on a single chip, or using 20 million times Mr. Teranishi’s invention.

In addition to this remarkable invention, Mr. Teranishi has published 80 papers and holds 41 Japanese patents and 11 US patents.

The Photographic Society of America is pleased and honored to recognize Nobukazu Teranishi for his outstanding contributions to imaging technology that are of enormous benefit to all digital photographers.

Albert L. Sieg, HonFPSA, MPSA: Chair, Progress Medal Committee

MUSHROOM ENTHUSIASTS may choose the “Mushroom” option on-site at Shoshone Base Camp all day Saturday, October 8, with Dr. Frank Dugan, WSU Fungi Specialist and Harley Barnhart, North Idaho Mycological Association (NIMA), with no limit to the number of participants.

Shoshone Base Camp was built as a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the 1930’s, and evolved into a U.S. Forest Service Camp when the CCC’s were disbanded at the start of World War II. The Forest Service stopped using it in the early 1990’s, and it sat idle, deteriorating, so they offered it for lease to non-profits, requiring that it be restored, with at least $10,000 in improvements each year. Lutherhaven operated Shoshone Base Camp with a “Special use Permit” from 1998 until 2009. U.S. Congress approved its sale in 2009 (the Camp was appraised at $705,000) and Lutherhaven purchased it for cash in December 2009, as a satellite to their main Camp on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Everyone is welcome with any level of camera skills.  The photo opportunities cover a broad variety of natural beauty and historical interest. Register online or phone or email Otto Stevens for Registration Forms, 509-327-8954 or 208-664-6048; ottostevens@msn.com
