Pat Gordy of Chattanooga, TN, was nominated to become the PSA Chapters, Clubs, and Councils Vice President following the 2011 PSA Annual Conference in Colorado Springs. Unfortunately, Pat became ill and was unable to fill the position. Nan Carder of Lancaster, CA, was appointed to fill this vacancy. She has written numerous articles describing PSA Club activities for the club’s newsletter. Nan serves as the PSA Club Rep and was the recipient of the 2011 PSA Club Rep of the Year Award (large club). The Lancaster Photography Association received a PSA Club Service Award in 2011. Nan is also active in the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs (S4C), the Council to which LPA belongs. She is on the S4C Board serving as Secretary and is the S4C Chair for Travel and Interclub Competitions. She has received the AS4C honor for service to S4C. Nan has been the Director of the PSA Membership Star Program since January 2010, sending out a thank you email to each member who refers a new member. She has referred 23 new members to PSA. She serves as the PSA Interclub Competition Consultant and the PSA Getting Started Consultant for the PSA Club and Council Services. Nan has written articles for the PSA quarterly club newsletter, The Projector. Nan welcomes suggestions regarding any Chapter, Club, or Council service that is presently being provided and ideas for services that could be provided: cccVP@psa-photo.org. EVERGLADES CHAPTER OF PSA PROGRAM The program will feature Ron Magill who is the Communications Director for the Miami Metro Zoo. Ron is an incredibly dynamic presenter who did a program for the Chapter a couple of years ago and he is returning to present slideshows covering India, Africa, and the National Parks (Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton). Ron has made regular appearances on Good Morning America, The Late Show With David Letterman, and The Today Show. He has also appeared on several documentaries for the Discovery Channel and the History Channel. After lunch there will be a short program of the 2011 Chapters Showcase. Mr. Teranishi was born in 1953 and has received degrees in physics from the University of Tokyo in 1976 and 1978, respectively. He joined the Panasonic Corporation in 2000 and is the General Manager in the Image Sensor Business Unit in Japan. Mr. Teranishi has been an influential technical leader in the development of both charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors and Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensors for 31 years, and accomplished the following three key technologies; (1) the pinned photodiode for no image lag, low noise and low dark current, (2) technologies to prevent high light deterations, (3) mega –pixel technologies for HDTV cameras and digital still cameras. The pinned photodiode is the most innovative technology in the progress of solid state image sensors, and Mr. Teranishi is widely recognized as its inventor. He invented it in 1980 and by 1982 he had fabricated it experimentally. The pinned photodiode CCD has been mass produced because of its superior performance since the middle of the 1980’s and in the late 1990’s this technology was introduced into CMOS sensors. There are three key features of the pinned photodiode technology beneficial to image makers. It converts incoming light – photons – into electrons with very high efficiency producing high sensitivity sensors. A second feature is that the so called ‘dark current’ is very low allowing long exposure times without noise. The third feature is that the technology accomplishes transfer of all of the converted electrons from the photosite leaving none behind. As a result of these features, almost all CCD’s and CMOS sensors came to use this technology and 200 million CCD’s and one billion CMOS sensors were produced in 2008. Today every CCD and every CMOS imager on the market today has the pinned photodiode in every pixel. That means, for example that a 20MP CMOS sensor has 20 million pinned photodiodes on a single chip, or using 20 million times Mr. Teranishi’s invention. In addition to this remarkable invention, Mr. Teranishi has published 80 papers and holds 41 Japanese patents and 11 US patents. The Photographic Society of America is pleased and honored to recognize Nobukazu Teranishi for his outstanding contributions to imaging technology that are of enormous benefit to all digital photographers. JIM EWINS NEW WHO’S WHO IN PHOTOGRAPHY COMMITTEE CHAIR
In 2010 Jim assumed the duties of Director, Who’s Who for Large Monochrome Prints. Diane Racey, FPSA, MPSA, who for many years guided the program and served as the Who’s Who Committee Chair, helped Jim to “learn the ropes.” Jim is currently serving as Director of the PPD Print Workshops and continues as Director of Membership for the PPD American Portfolios. Who’s Who in Photography recognizes the photographic achievements of exhibitors in PSA-recognized International Exhibitions by compiling their acceptances and providing the results for publication in Who’s Who in Photography which is mailed to members with the May issue of the PSA Journal. Division Who’s Who Directors work closely with their Division Exhibition Standards Director to ensure accurate and fair recognition for exhibitors. “MUSHROOMS, MOUNTAINS, MINES AND MISSIONS” The Weekend Package Option ($116): Lodging Friday and Saturday nights Saturday Only Option ($12): 8 AM “Mushrooms” lecture; Saturday photo field trip; sack lunch
MUSHROOM ENTHUSIASTS may choose the “Mushroom” option on-site at Shoshone Base Camp all day Saturday, October 8, with Dr. Frank Dugan, WSU Fungi Specialist and Harley Barnhart, North Idaho Mycological Association (NIMA), with no limit to the number of participants. Shoshone Base Camp was built as a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the 1930’s, and evolved into a U.S. Forest Service Camp when the CCC’s were disbanded at the start of World War II. The Forest Service stopped using it in the early 1990’s, and it sat idle, deteriorating, so they offered it for lease to non-profits, requiring that it be restored, with at least $10,000 in improvements each year. Lutherhaven operated Shoshone Base Camp with a “Special use Permit” from 1998 until 2009. U.S. Congress approved its sale in 2009 (the Camp was appraised at $705,000) and Lutherhaven purchased it for cash in December 2009, as a satellite to their main Camp on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Everyone is welcome with any level of camera skills. The photo opportunities cover a broad variety of natural beauty and historical interest.
