Host Int'l Exhibition: 2012 Exhibition Standards Update

For 2012, the Exhibition Standards have been amended in the following major areas.

Section 1

(a): To prevent confusion we’ve added that: the PSA Journal is the official exhibition listing venue. And: Only changes, approved by the Exhibition Standards Director(s) to the conditions of recognition, will be accepted following publication in the PSA Journal.

Section 2

Several changes have been made to this section the most significant to 2 (e) and (f). Added for clarification in 2 (e) was: The application must list all Divisions that recognition is being requested from: New Item 2 (f) states: No section can be approved by more than one Division.

Section 5

(a): Added to this item was: (aliases are not permitted) and a Note indicating the following: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced, or used, “may not be eligible” for awards or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition “and could be subject to disqualification by the exhibition sponsors.”

(o and p). These two sections are new and significant: In (o) it’s outlined that: Exhibitions using digital projection must judge the images as received from the photographer at 100% of the required pixel size. Digital images must not be altered by the Exhibition before judging.

(p) states: Exhibitions hosting digital projection sections must specify the type of equipment used to judge the images, including the pixel dimensions.

Section 14

(a): Added to this section was: In addition to the free PSA Gold Medal presented in each recognized section, an exhibition may offer the Nature Division Wildlife Medal for the best wildlife in an open section.

Section 19

There were several significant changes made to this section; they follow:

(a): added was: Color images can be converted to grayscale monochrome. Infrared images are not allowed.

(b) PSA Authentic Wildlife (new) definition: Authentic wildlife is defined as one or more organisms living free and unrestrained in a natural, or adopted, habitat. Therefore, landscapes, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or any living subject taken under controlled conditions, are not eligible for wildlife competitions. Authentic wildlife is not limited to uncontrolled zoological subjects. Land and marine botanical subjects in the wild (including fungi and algae) are also eligible subjects, as are animal carcasses. The Nature Division Silver Medal shall be the award for Wildlife Awards (in Open Sections) in exhibitions given PSA Recognition by the Nature Division. The Nature Division Silver Medal shall not be awarded as “Best of Show” in sections restricted to Wildlife.

(e): More clarification was required here so the following was added: The Nature Gold Medal shall be reserved for the Nature Division’s use for its Division Awards presented as part of the Nature Division Sections for the PSA International and for the two highest Nature Division Service Awards (Gold Medal Service Award and Irma Rudd Exemplary Service Award).

(f) Exhibiting: Added here was: Nature slides may be scanned and combined with digital images for projection in the separate Nature section at all public exhibitions. Exhibitors will be informed if slides will be scanned for judging.

Minor Changes

Minor changes were made to 2 (a); 4(c); 5 (i) (iii); 6(f) 7 (d) (ii); 9(i) and to “Appendix A” the PSA Uniform Judging Practices (Part B). The latter document is under complete review and a draft of the revisions will be tabled at the next PSA conference in San Francisco.

The ESC constantly reviews the document to help with interpretation on the part of exhibitions and exhibitors. This process will continue and, if the past is an indicator of the future, it will become more challenging. The ESC welcomes input to the ES, preferably, before May 1st, 2012. This allows it time to evaluate that input before it’s brought to the PSA Board for approval. The ESC wishes all exhibition chairpersons and entrants every success in 2012.
