CPID offers a wide variety of slide and digital study groups to all individual PSA members. The primary purpose of each group is to expand the knowledge and improve the skills of its members through mutual assistance and support. The emphasis is placed on learning. Many of the groups, particularly the digital ones, include members who live outside North America. In addition to the Study Groups that are currently active, a new Study Group can be started when there is sufficient interest. There is always a space available for anyone wishing to join a group.

Digital Study Groups

The Digital Study Groups use a web site, as the gateway to the CPID Study Groups’ individual webpages. Email is used exclusively for all communications and images. The images are submitted through features in the webpages.

The CPID digital Study Groups have a definite world-wide flavor as over half of the groups have one or more members from outside North America. One group has a Secretary that resides in the United Kingdom. It is a goal of these Study Groups to increase International participation.

The size of a digital Study Group is purposefully kept small, with rarely more than six (6) members. This is done to insure that each member has adequate time to participate in the group’s activities, while contending with the demands and priorities of everyday life. Another important reason for this arrangement is that everyone is performing the same activity within the same time frame.

A Round for each group spans a 2-month period, in which the primary activities are submitting images and providing reviews. Three (3) weeks are allocated for each activity; on occasion, additional time is available for the latter. The files and related information are posted to the group webpage shortly after each activity is closed.

Two of the groups currently have permanent Commentators. Another goal is to establish and use a cadre of additional highly experienced photographers to serve as Guest Commentators that rotate through the groups. This is intended as another opportunity for the members to expand their knowledge and enhance their skills.

There are a number of General Study Groups, which have a mix of photographers with varying experiences. This provides a good balance for the growth of all the members. Other Study Groups include General Creative, Creative Floral, and Black & White. Among the planned-theme groups are Still Life/Table Top-Flowers, Macro, and Stars (for experienced exhibititors who have earned CPID Star Ratings), as well as for some US/International exchanges. There are always openings for anyone wishing to join. There is a continuing need for Group Secretaries. A training program has been established to prepare any volunteers to take on these duties.

If interested in any of these opportunities (participation in a digital or slide Study Group, becoming a Guest Commentator or Group Secretary), please contact the Director, at the address shown above and include a PSA membership number.

Slide Study Groups

Each group generally consists of six (6) to ten (10) members with mostly US members because of mailing concerns. Some groups have highly experienced photographers that serve as Commentators. There are several groups which consist of US and International members, where the members of one country provide comments only on the images of the other. These have been particularly interesting over years in expanding the horizons of all.

The Secretary of each group establishes a schedule for the receipt and shipment of a notebook, which contains the members’ slides and sometimes CDs. The notebook is passed to each member in a round-robin fashion. When the notebook is received, the member will remove their previous round’s materials, add their remarks for each of the other members’ images and the insert their own slides or CD for the current round. The notebook is then shipped to the next member on the schedule. While a majority of the groups are oriented toward general subjects, there are some which have special themes. One of the theme groups is specifically available to members who have one or more stars in CPID. Other particular interests can be made available if there is sufficient interest.
