A photo essay uses a series of images, with optional text or narration, and/or music to communicate a single purpose or to tell a story. The subject or topic of the photo essay is completely open. An essay might be organized around a theme (e.g., blue, after dark, landscapes, long exposures, patterns, shadows), a collection of similar images, a travel experience, an important cause, or a story of an event or activity. Essays are judged for their storyline as well as their presentation.
Eligibility & Rules
Entrants must be a PSA member in good standing. A copy of the entrant’s PSA Membership Card or PSA Journal mailing label needs to be included with the essay. Any essays not received by the June 1 deadline will not be judged.
Any number of images may be utilized in a Photo Essay, as well as any special effects (e.g., dissolves, transitions). The entrant’s name must not be visible to the judging panel. The maximum running time is ten (10) minutes. Royalty-free music must be used for an essay to be considered for a medal. A member can submit no more than two (2) Photo Essays each year.
To have an entry returned following the judging, entrants must provide the correct return postage and a return mailing label. A specific essay or travelette may be submitted to only one PSA division each year. The same essay or travelette may be submitted to another division’s essay competition in another year.
