Pictorial Print Division Applying for a Star in Color Prints
James Baker, FPSA, Director, Award of Merit, Color Prints 12232 S. 36th Ave. Milwaukie, OR 97222 USA email: James Baker, Director
You’re ready to apply for a star in color prints? Congratulations! Compared to obtaining the required number of acceptances, the application process is simple. Each star level requires a certain number of acceptances in PSA-recognized exhibitions, with a certain minimum number of different images as indicated by their titles. Membership Requirements--An applicant for a star rating must be a PSA member in good standing. Acceptances must be achieved in PSA recognized International Exhibitions.
1. All acceptances earned in Exhibitions closing on or before Dec. 31, 1999, may be applied toward any star rating. 2. Acceptances earned on or after Jan. 1, 2000, but prior to the applicant joining PSA, may be applied only toward the first star in the Division awarding the star. 3. All other acceptances must be earned during the applicant’s current period of membership. A lapsed membership can be reinstated by the payment of back dues.
You must send a copy of your current membership card. This is probably the most common thing star applicants forget.
The Application–Your application from a previous star is on file unless it was very long ago, and you don’t need to repeat information about those acceptances. As much as possible, the Pictorial Print Division uses the Who’s Who totals published in the May issue of the PSA Journal. To start your application, compare your records with the Who’s Who totals. If you think you had more in any year, look at the list of PSA-recognized exhibitions at the head of that year’s Who’s Who list. If the exhibition was not recognized, you can’t count the acceptances. If it was, send me a list of your acceptances for that year, sorted by exhibition, and I’ll count them all if I can find them in the catalogs. You also will need to send a list for the years in which you had acceptances, but not enough to be listed in Who’s Who. It’s all right to send more acceptances than you need for the star; we’ll keep them on record and count them for the next star. Requests for multiple stars within each Class (A or B) can be combined in one application, but please send a separate application for each Class - DO NOT MIX CLASS ‘A’ & ‘B’ PRINTS. You are entitled to judging credits if you judge PSA-recognized international exhibitions: 3 judging credits if there were 3 or fewer judges; 2 credits with 4 or 5 judges, 1 credit with 6 to 9 judges, and none if there were 10 or more. List those separately.
Finally, provide a list of your new titles, preferably sorted by year, with an example of an exhibition where each was accepted. Neither the title list nor the acceptance lists (if you need them) have to be on the form. If it is easier with your record keeping system to print the lists separately, that’s fine. In any case, please number the acceptances consecutively and do the same with the titles.
Fees: The fee for each star is $10, payable by cash or a check (made out to PSA) on a US bank. It is also possible to pay by Visa or MasterCard; write (or email) me for the necessary form. Applicants for 5 stars and higher can request a trophy: the cost is $40 for the trophy plus postage of $15 in the US or $20 foreign.
Ethical Standards: By applying for a star rating, you affirm that you have followed the requirements of the PSA Ethical Standards Statement, as published in the PSA Journal. In particular, the ethics statement says that: Images submitted for competition shall originate as photographs by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the photographer certifies the work as his own. Any image accepted in a PSA-Recognized exhibition shall not be re-entered in the same format in the same section of the exhibition by using a different title or a like in-camera duplication or a reproduction duplication. An accepted image may not be re-titled for entry in the same section of any other PSA-recognized exhibition.
Recognition: If your application is in order, you’ll receive a certificate, suitable for framing, and a colored tab to wear with your PSA pin. The award will be published in the PSA Journal to recognize your accomplishment. Look for it in the January, April, July or October issue, but remember that with publication deadlines it might not be in the issue right after your award.
